It’s time to pack your bags. Easy enough? Ask any experienced mom and I assure you she’ll look back adoringly at her first hospital bag experience. As in, look at how cute I am all clueless and adorable. For starters, it was most likely a three suitcase ordeal. One for her, one for her significant other and one for the baby. Don’t all 6 pound bundles need a suitcase too? If you’ve already packed your bags and are blushing as you side eye your moving van at the door, don’t fret! Go lug those back to your room (maybe have someone else do it, you’re pregnant come to think of it) and let’s reevaluate things together.
Mom
- The bag – I actually was gifted this after my second was born and haven’t used another travel bag since. The separate compartment below is advertised for shoes, but this is 100% the perfect mini bag for babe. Such a perfect way to have you and baby combined without disarray.
- Nursing Bra(s) – I went with these and still am loving them seven months later. Not cumbersome and easy to slip in nursing pads
- Nursing Pads – even if it takes your milk longer to come in, adding nursing salve during those first few days can makes things messy and they double nicely to absorb those oils
- Nursing Salve – Lansinoh is another great brand. I’ve used both and can say that they will do the trick for those first few weeks when you two are getting the hang of things.
- Nursing Pillow – Even if you don’t plan to breastfeed these come in handy for big siblings and extra support those first few days. I absolutely fell in love with these covers.
- Slippers – size up a half size for post partum swelling (not that it would ever happen to you. Maybe forget I mentioned that?)
- Lightweight robe and gown – I love that this company offers a combination kit. Some even come with swaddles for babe. I used this one from target and loved how easy it was to get in and out of a hospital bed in. https://www.target.com/p/women-s-kimono-wrap-robe-total-comfort-gilligan-o-malley-153/-/A-51109043#lnk=sametab
- Gown – the perfect piece for expecting moms. I wore this throughout my pregnancy and again in the hospital. It’s still a favorite of mine. Nursing friendly, full coverage, & 100% appropriate for hospital guests and sleep alike. While you’re visiting check out the matching gowns for babe. Can you stand it?
- Don’t forget this combo for a second gown option.
- Toiletries
- Underwear – Most hospitals provide some pretty amazing undies for you to use (I always packed several extra pair to take home). In the case that you want to have something a bit less sterile, grab something like this to have on hand.
- instax camera and film – There’s nothing cuter than a mini photo of your newest mini. I try and use my instax for special occasions like births, birthdays, and holidays.
- chargers – don’t forget to bring a phone charger! Let’s face it, this is where half of baby’s first photos will end up.
For Babe
pacifiers – We love these buy Eco Piggy. Natural rubber & BPA free
Change of clothes – These kimono tops are so easy to throw on and the built in mittens are a life saver. These also come in wrap and footed styles and were a favorite of ours. These zip up footies zip from top and bottom making diaper changes a breeze.
Baby Blanket – We used the heirloom blanket from Willaby and were blown away by the craftsmanship! Bring along a swaddle blanket or two as well for layering.
Still have room in your bag? A few extras worth considering:
- Your pillow and a blanket from home – nothing beats the comforts of home and you may find you sleep better with familiar pieces around
- Towel and shower slippers – yes, the hospital will have towels, but chances are they won’t compare to yours from home. I forgot to bring my own this last time and regretted it. Might be worth the extra space for you too.
- Lactation Bars – I used and loved these. You may find yourself pretty hungry those first few days after your delivery and having a quick grab and go snack at arm’s reach with ingredients that nurture breastfeeding is always a good idea.
- Baby Book – Artifact uprising & Promptly Journals get our vote
If you’re ever in doubt, check with a friend who has delivered in the same hospital or birthing center and get their take on things. What are some things you wish you’d packed for your delivery?
