Let’s kick start the DYI posts with something relatively simple and full of sensory play for the littles. We have a love/hate relationship with playdough in our home. There’s the mess, the mixing of the colors (why did no one warn me of this before kids?) and the dried tiny crumbles for my vacuum to suck up then spit back out at me. In the end, it’s almost always worth the mess when I see my children create and explore with it. The age range is broad enough to entertain more than one, and once they’re past the age of everything entering the mouth, you can let them begin exploring with it for the perfect sensory play activity. Most of the ingredients were staples in our home and apart from a little flour on the floor, cleanup was a breeze.
Ingredients:
- 2 Tbsp Cream Of Tartar
- 2Tbsp coconut or vegetable oil
- 2Tbsp Salt
- 1 Cup flour
- 1Cup water
Directions:
Add all ingredients to stove top and stir constantly over medium heat until mixture forms a dough. This should take anywhere from 2-3 minutes. Remove from stovetop and allow to cool over a silicon mat or wooden serving tray with a light dusting of flour. Once cooled you can kneed with additional flour to get things less sticky and break apart for adding color. These are a great natural option and a little goes a long way. We kept ours white for a first birthday gift and tied things together with this small rolling pin and a cookie cutter. Add a drop of essential oils or dried lavender for even more sensory fun.
Quick Note:
This will last longer if you keep it in a sealed container in the fridge I’ve found. We can get a good 5-6 months life out of it.
